SKU: 2024—McDonogh 35 Sousaphone Line Category:
This one-of-a-kind original oil painting was created by New Orleans artist Emilie Rhys over several years, beginning in 2014 in her French Quarter art studio, and completed there in 2019. This painting appears on pages 188–91 of the New Orleans Jazz Museum exhibit catalog “New Orleans Music Observed: The Art of Noel Rockmore and Emilie Rhys,” published in 2021. .
Based on the artist’s photos taken the night of Friday, January 18, 2013, this painting depicts the sousaphone line of the high-school McDonogh 35 Roneagles Marching Band. She has captured them as the band was awaiting the signal from band director Lawrence Rawlins to form up and start marching down Bourbon Street in the Martin Luther King Parade.
The artwork is on a stretched linen canvas surfaced with layers of tissue paper providing a finely wrought visible texture, finished with a brushed/scraped/poured oil ground, applied and fully cured prior to beginning the actual image. Ms. Rhys has been prepping canvases in this unique manner for over forty years, greatly contributing to the richness of the final artwork. The sale included a custom wood frame, 27" x 39" with an antique silver finish.
The McDonogh 35 Roneagles will receive a cash commission from the sale of this artwork in which they are depicted.
