This one-of-a-kind original pencil and ink painting was created in two stages by New Orleans artist Emilie Rhys. First, on November 12, 2017, the drawing was created during an evening live music performance in the courtyard at Scene By Rhys Fine Art (its former location on Toulouse Street), the drawing of Todd Burdick playing sousaphone. This event was celebrating the gallery's first anniversary with a performance by Tuba Skinny.
While most of the artist's live-music drawings are completed on the spot in the venue, some receive additional work, and in this case gouache paint was added in 2023 at the artist's French Quarter art studio, utilizing the artist's signature blend of expressionism and pointillism to accentuate and enhance the forms of both musician and sousaphone.
Mr. Burdick will receive a cash commission from the sale of this artwork in which he is depicted.
